Synplicity Announces Support for Linux Operating System
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 21, 2001--Synplicity Inc.
(Nasdaq:SYNP), a leading supplier of software for the design and
verification of semiconductors, today announced it plans to add
support for the Linux operating system (OS) to its entire portfolio of
synthesis and prototyping products. The company announced immediate
availability of a Linux PC version of its popular Synplify Pro(TM)
synthesis product, the first of the company's products to support the
open source operating system for Red Hat Linux. Synplicity® now
supports all of the leading operating systems, including Windows NT,
Windows ME, Windows-2000, HP, Solaris and Linux.
``Designers of both ASICs and programmable logic devices are
increasingly using the Linux operating system in their design
environments because it provides them with fast, low-cost and easily
scalable workstations and servers,'' said Andy Haines, vice president
of marketing at Synplicity. ``Like many others providing programmable
logic solutions, we recognize this shift and are making the R&D
investment to help ensure that customers have the flexibility to
configure their design systems to suit their needs. From the
beginning, Synplicity has focused on productivity for our customers
and this support enables our customers to continue to achieve fast
results with our Synplify Pro software, while using the OS of their
choice.''
Released in 1994, Linux is a free Unix-type operating system
originally created by Linus Torvalds with the assistance of developers
around the world. Developed under the GNU General Public License, the
source code for Linux is freely available to everyone.
``The performance and cost benefits of Linux provide an attractive
option for SOPC designs,'' said Erik Cleage, Senior Vice President of
Marketing at Altera Corporation (Nasdaq:ALTR). ``Our recent
announcement of plans for Linux support for our Quartus II design
software combined with the Linux version of Synplify Pro software
offers Linux-based designers a complete high performance design flow.''
Synplicity's Synplify Pro software currently supports Red Hat
Linux. ``We are seeing a tremendous surge in use from the programmable
logic industry,'' said Marty Wesley, Red Hat Linux Product Manager.
``With support being announced by the leading programmable chip makers,
and now one of the leading programmable logic software companies, it
is clear that Linux is gaining in popularity with designers, due to
its speed and reliability benefits. We look forward to working with
Synplicity to add Red Hat Linux support for its other software
products.''
Pricing and Availability
Floating licenses of the Synplify Pro software for Linux PC are
available now. Prices start at $15,000.
